Eno Ingredients and Side Effects- Homemade antacid recipes

Eno is one of the most famous names of an antacid which is often used to get an instant relief from problem like indigestion, acidity, gassy stomach and heartburn due to too much stomach acid production. Eno is manufacture by combining three main ingredients together- Sodium bicarbonate,(baking soda), sodium carbonate and citric anhydrous. Sodium bicarbonate is the active ingredient of eno antacids that helps neutralize the stomach acids, giving you an immediate relief however, this relief is temporary. Plus, it is also beneficial in releasing trapped stomach gas.

The answer to this question is simple- It is a very quick-acting ingredient that can help control your acidity within a few minutes.

People with impraied renal function should also avoid eno.

 Eno Antacid Side Effects

Although eno doesn’t have too many adverse effects, still you are advised to not use it in case you notice any sign of allergic reaction such as red itchy skin, shortness of breath, sneezing, swollen lymph nodes in throat, itchy eyes etc. Also, stop using it in case of black stools, weakness, dizziness and vomiting. In such case immediately pay a visit to your nearest physician. Furthermore, consult your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating mother.

Again: Eno also has high sodium content so do not take it if you are suffering from hypertension. Do not give it to children below 12 and also avoid taking 5 or 6 sachets in 24 hours.

If you don’t want to use any over the counter medicine like eno then you can opt for your own homemade recipes and remedies that can help you fight with excessive stomach acid.

Homemade Baking soda Antacid Recipe for Acidity and Gas ( Homemade ENO Recipe)

Prep. Time- 2 Minutes

Ingredients:

Baking Soda- ½ Teaspoon

Lemon Juice- ¼ teaspoon

Water- 1 cup

Directions:

First of all, mix lemon juice in water.

Now, add baking soda and drink the resultant mixture immediately.

Drink it at every 4-5 hourly interval or as required.

Beside this recipe, you can use several remedies to get of stomach acidity and heartburn. Some of them are given below:

Drink Cold Milk

You can drink cold milk to get rid of acidity related pain and discomfort. Why this remedy works? As you know, milk is loaded with calcium and this calcium helps prevent too much acid formation. You can add a spoon of ghee to make this remedy more soothing.

Chew Some Cloves

Clove is a carminative herb and chewing clove helps release the saliva from the salivary glands. This saliva helps promote the digestion and good digestion means – no more acidity!

Fennel Seeds

Eating saunf is also said to be beneficial. It has cooling, soothing, digestion aiding and anti-ulcer properties that calm down the irritated and inflamed stomach lining and helps it to heal faster.

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera is also laden with natural soothing and healing properties. Drinking aloe vera juice not only calm your stomach but also it will neutralize the acid and give you a feeling of relief. Here, something I would like to share with you- First thing first- aloe vera may cause bloating and diarrhea, secondly, it is also believed to increase the risk of colon cancer so do not drink too much and avoid its prolonged use. Rest everything is fine. So give it a shot. 

Eat Some Almonds

Almonds are also helpful in relieving the symptoms of heartburn so keep them handy and eat then whenever needed.

Slippery Elm and Vinegar

You can either use a mixture of one teaspoon slippery elm and one glass of water Or you can go for a spoon full of apple cider vinegar in a glass full of water.

Prevention is better than medicine, so here are a few tips and habits that you should keep in your mind to keep acidity at bay.

  1. One of the biggest reasons behind acidic stomach is – overeating. Avoid over eating as much as possible. Break your lunch and dinner into several smaller meals. Simple eat smaller meals frequently. Also, include some easy-to-digest foods into you food menu.
  2. Coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco are also major culprits, hence you should avoid them.
  3. Do not eat too much spicy, fried, fatty and oily food. Plus, stay away from citrus fruits as well.  You should also limit the use of gas forming items like beans, peas, cabbage etc.
  4. Avoid taking to much antacids because by doing so your body will become dependent upon them and as a result it will produce more acid.
  5. Include alkaline food items like- banana, apple and watermelon into your diet list.
  6. Stress and physical inactivity are also responsible for acid production in the stomach. Go for a 45 min walk and practice some meditation exercises to get rid of all tensions from your mind and life.
